In Africa, where the number of developers reached 716,000 last year, up 3.8% from 2020, tech giants are increasingly looking for tech talent.

Microsoft and Amazon have been on a recruitment drive for the past six months, offering alluring incentives like relocation to their hubs in the United States and Europe to win over the small but growing talent pool in the face of fierce competition from startups and other tech behemoths like Google.

The Great Resignation’s effects, which caused employers to look elsewhere for new talent, and the expansion of tech giants like Google, Oracle, and Visa into Africa are expected to support the demand for African developers.

Even so, as demand grows, there are disproportionately few new developers entering the market. This is large because traditional educational institutions in the majority of African nations have been slow to update their curricula to meet the needs of the labor market and the rapidly evolving field of technology.
