Elon Musk stated that he intended to increase Twitter’s character limit to 1,000 characters.
The Twitter owner responded to several users who suggested changing the character limit.
Twitter’s character limit was last updated in 2017 when it was increased from 140 to 280 characters.
Musk responded to a Twitter user’s suggestion to increase the character limit in each tweet to 1,000 by remarking, “It’s on the to-do list.“
Earlier in the day, Musk responded, “excellent idea,” to a Twitter user who proposed that the firm change the character restriction on messages from “that bothersome 280” to 420.
Musk has previously used the number 420 in his work, a clear reference to marijuana culture. One example is his plan to take Tesla private at $420 per share. An SEC complaint was eventually filed as a result of his tweets announcing the scheme.
Musk claimed days after acquiring Twitter for $44 billion that he was open to allowing users to send longer messages and videos.
Twitter limits tweets to 280 characters, but users are divided on whether the character limit should be increased or decreased.
In response to Musk’s statement that increasing the character limit was on his to-do list, one Twitter user suggested that the platform stop including spaces in the limit, giving more room for letters. Another user suggested that Twitter limit tweet length to 280 characters while allowing long-form notes.

Shorter tweets encourage users to reduce their posts into easy-to-read bites, according to one Twitter user.
Insider’s request for comment was not immediately responded to by Twitter.

Since his takeover, Musk has announced numerous changes to the site. The most noteworthy is Twitter Blue, a membership service that charges users $8 per month in exchange for a blue checkmark and the ability to post longer videos, view fewer advertisements, and have a priority ranking with their postings.
